TroutTracker privacy policy
TroutTracker is a fishing log for sea trout anglers on the Danish coast. It is made by InfoAid (contact: rla@infoaid.dk), which is responsible for the personal data described here.
What TroutTracker stores on your phone
Your trips (route, times, place names, conditions, notes, photos), the fish you log (caught, lost or spotted: time, position, length, weight, lure, photos, notes), your hotspots (favourite places: position, name, description, photos), your lure list and your settings are kept on your phone. Photos you take with the camera in TroutTracker are also saved in your phone's photo gallery.
Location
TroutTracker uses your phone's location:
- on Home and Hotspots, to show the conditions and the rating where you are (not saved);
- while a trip is recording, to record your route and where fish are caught, lost or spotted, also with the screen off. TroutTracker shows a notification while it records; location access "while using the app" is enough. Recording stops when you pause or finish the trip.
To look up conditions, a position near you (or a point just offshore) is sent to the weather and sea services listed below, some of them through TroutTracker's server. They do not receive your name or account.
Camera, motion sensors and microphone
- Camera: only when you take a photo of a fish, a trip or your profile picture.
- Motion sensors: only when you have turned on cast counting, and only while a trip is recording, to count casts and to train your personal cast model. The number of casts and your cast model are saved in your account. The readings of your training casts (between "Begin" and "Completed") are also added to the anonymized data below, to improve cast counting for everyone. If you turn on "Record motion for analysis", the readings of recent trips are kept on your phone, where you can save them to a folder you choose, and are also added to the anonymized data.
- Microphone: only while a trip trains your cast model (or with "Record motion for analysis" on), to hear the words "Begin" and "Completed". Speech is recognised by the phone's own speech service; TroutTracker does not record or store any audio.
Account
TroutTracker is used with an account (email and a username you choose). It keeps a copy of your trips, fish, routes, hotspots and photos in your account, so they are kept if you lose your phone and can be used on a new phone. Your settings go with them: fishing style, your lures, cast counting and your personal cast model (motion patterns of your casts, no sound), so a new phone starts where the old one left off. The account also keeps the app's language, so notifications reach you in it. If you add a profile picture, it is kept in your account too, and your buddies (and anglers with a buddy request between you) can see it next to your username. Sign-in uses a one-time code sent to your email; there is no password.
Buddies and sharing
You can add buddies (both must accept). You decide what they see, separately for each buddy: caught fish you choose to share, your saved trips (only their caught fish, without notes) and your hotspots (with their description and photos). Lost and spotted fish are never shared. Trips and hotspots you mark as private are never shown to anyone else. Shared catches show your buddy where the fish was caught and the route up to that moment, never your live position. Phone notifications about buddies' catches use Google Firebase Cloud Messaging.
Anonymized data for analysis
Every trip and fish is also added, without your name, email, username, exact positions, route, photos or notes, to anonymized data used to improve the sea trout rating and for statistics. It holds a random code per phone, the region and type of coast, the date, a two-hour time slot, rounded conditions, the trip's duration, distance and cast count, water visibility, the wind, waves, seaweed and other fishers you saw, whether you saw a porpoise or a seal, and each fish's length, weight, lure type and whether it was caught, lost or spotted. This data cannot be traced back to you. Hotspots are never part of it. The anonymized data cannot be downloaded through the app; only InfoAid reads it, in the database itself, for analysis.
Cast motion data is kept the same way, apart from the trip data: the motion readings of training casts (and, with "Record motion for analysis" on, of whole trips), with times counted from the start of each recording, the month, fishing style, phone model and app version. It holds no position, route, clock time, sound, name or account, and the random code is kept only as a scrambled stand-in. It is used to build a cast counter that works for everyone.
Limits against misuse
To stop misuse and unexpected costs, the server counts requests per phone, per account and per internet address for a short time. The internet address is only stored in scrambled form, and the counts are deleted after two days. Files in the photo store that are far larger than a photo from the app are deleted.
Where data is kept and who processes it
- Microsoft Azure, region Sweden Central (EU): your account, synced trips, fish, routes, hotspots, photos and the anonymized data.
- Google: Firebase Cloud Messaging (notifications), Google Maps (the satellite maps) and the phone's speech recognition (cast training).
- Weather and sea data: FCOO (the Danish Defence's ocean forecasts), DMI (Danish Meteorological Institute), Dataforsyningen (Danish place names and depth), MiljøGIS (coastal water bodies) and OpenStreetMap receive positions to look up conditions.
Who can see your personal data
Your trips, catches, routes and hotspots are read only by TroutTracker's own server, to keep them in step between your phones and to show buddies what you chose to share with them. TroutTracker's owner does not look at individual anglers' trips or spots and has no routine access to them: the owner's own database login can only read the anonymized data. Every access to the database, and every change to who may access it, is recorded in a log that cannot be changed or deleted for a year, so any access would be visible afterwards. Hotspots and trips you mark as private are never shown to anyone else.
How long data is kept
Data on your phone is kept until you delete it, delete your account or remove the app; photos saved in your phone's gallery stay there until you delete them. If several people use the same phone, each account's data is kept separately and is only shown after signing in to that account. Data in your account is kept until you delete it or your account. Anonymized data is kept for analysis, also when you delete a trip, a fish or your account; it is not linked to you, and when you delete your account its random code is replaced, so it can no longer be connected to your phone either.
Your rights
You can see and download your own data in the app (Profile → Download my data). You can delete trips, fish and hotspots in the app, and delete your account and all its data in the app (Profile → Account → Delete account) or by emailing rla@infoaid.dk. Under the GDPR you may also ask for access, correction or restriction, and complain to Datatilsynet (the Danish Data Protection Agency).
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is published at the same address with its date.
